Be 360 Aware this Storm Season

What does it mean to Be 360 Aware?

Being aware is one thing, but being 360 Aware means knowing what’s above, below and in current sight when you’re working on-site.

Each month several accidents are reported due to individuals not being 360 Aware. This has caused delays on-site, left a community without power and, in the worst-case scenario, has been fatal.

Questions to consider in order to be 360 Aware prior to commencing work on overhead and underground powerline network distributions:

  • What and where are my danger zones and clearances?
  • Do I require an asset inspection?
  • In the event of an emergency, what is the correct protocol?

Planning is KEY!

  • Considerations with overhead powerlines:
    • Know the voltages of network assets and clearances required on site of the current location you’re working on.
    • Analyse and determine the extension reach and height of all your equipment prior to commencing work.
  • Considerations with underground network distributions:
  • Enquire with Dial Before you Dig
    • 5Ps when undertaking excavation work
      • Plan
      • Prepare
      • Pothole
      • Protect
      • Proceed

NEVER… lift loads above or below a powerline. The impact of a load small or heavy landing on a powerline is highly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.

Fact: The higher the voltage of a powerline, the larger the danger zone is. (As shown in the image below. Illustration taken from https://westernpower.com.au/media/2219/working-safely-around-the-western-power-network-factsheet.pdf)

Powerlines the dangers zone Western Australia

Emergencies to Powerlines can include, but are not limited to,

  • A fire breaking out within close proximity of a powerline
  • A power pole is excessively leaning, wires are overhanging, or you see sparks
  • An underground cable green dome is damaged or exposed

In the event of an emergency ensure you call 000 and Western Power.
